Overview

An entry-level course built to the National EMS Education Standards for the Emergency Medical Responder. You learn scene safety, patient assessment, airway management, bleeding control, CPR and AED use, and how to hand a patient off to the next level of care. The course prepares you for the NREMT EMR cognitive exam and the state-approved skills exam. Utah licenses EMRs at 16 and requires a Bureau-approved course, NREMT certification, CPR training from the past two years and a fingerprint background check. Take it in person at our training center, as a hybrid course with online lectures and in-person skills days, or with live online lectures and in-person skills days. Skills labs are always in person.

What You Will Learn

  • Size up a scene for safety and call for the right resources
  • Perform a primary and secondary patient assessment
  • Open and maintain an airway and give oxygen and ventilations
  • Control life-threatening bleeding, including tourniquet use
  • Perform high-quality CPR and use an AED
  • Give an accurate handoff report to the arriving EMS crew

Who Should Attend

New providers age 16 and up: firefighters, search and rescue, law enforcement, ski patrol, industrial response teams and anyone starting in EMS. Utah licensure; out-of-state students should confirm their own state office accepts the course.

Prerequisites

  • Age 16 or older for a Utah EMR license (R911-5-201)
